What is a Falling Weight Deflectometer?

The Falling Weight Deflectometer is a non-destructive testing (NDT) device used to assess the structural capacity of in-service pavements. It simulates the load of a passing wheel by dropping a known weight onto a loading plate placed on the pavement surface. Sensors then measure the resulting deflection of the pavement at various distances from the load point.

This data is used to calculate modulus of elasticity of pavement layers, detect weak zones, and determine overlay thickness or rehabilitation strategies. FWD testing is essential for pavement performance analysis, maintenance planning, and design validation.
